Links
I have too many links to just place them on the right column of the site, so I guess a page dedicated to interesting links is worthy. It also allows me to add some commentaries. So. Without further delay:
News Sites:
GameIndutry: Games are serious business, and GameIndutry.biz is here to prove it. Although it feature more news about the industry rather than about games (and being covered in ads), it's still a great site for dry, factual news, specially if you're tired of the usual hype-driven, bullshit-filled news.
Rock, Paper, Shotgun: Probably the best PC news site around. Written by four english gentleman with a discerning taste for games. Also: great, polite and generally awesome commenters.
PC Gamer: Another great PC news site. Also written (mostly) by british gals. I'm seeing a pattern here.
Freeware Games:
Pixel Prospector: A neat little site that adds new (free) games every Friday. More focused on 2D action, shmups and plataforming games.
Pixel Prospect Indev: Older brother of Pixel Prospector, only posts games in development.
Freeware Database: A compendium of free games around the net. Offers some basic info about the games, a single screenshot and a download link. There are no ratings, but the best games are marked with a star ( http://freeware.remakes.org/star.gif ) next to their names. One nice feature is that the home page displays random "starred" games , so it's a great way to discover some hidden freeware gems. Also great to browse when you have nothing better to do.
TIG Source Database: Although More "indie" than "freeware", the TIG Source DB is a(nother) compendium of free (and paid) indie games, offering screenshots, videos and information like genre, price, download link (full game or demo), file size, platform, developer, realease date, etc etc. It also allows users to rate (from 1 to 5) and review games. As of this writing, it contains around 13.700 games.
Entertainment (Or: sites to browse when you have nothing better to do) :
Newgrounds: This one is proving to be a bit hard to write about, so I'll leave wikipedia to do the dirty work for me: "Newgrounds is an American website started by Tom Fulp which primarily hosts Flash animations and games, but also features a music-oriented page, along with an art portal. It's the oldest and most popular flash website wada wada wada." Just go watch There She Is, it'll make you shed manly tears (even if you are a girl).
Nostalgia Critic: the actual site is called That Guy With the Glasses, and while it features many interesting sub-sections, like Bum Reviews (quick reviews of recently released movies), Ask That Guy (stupid questions with bizarre answers) , 5 Second Reviews and others, the Nostalgia Critic, in which Doug Walker, as "The Critic", watches and reviews old (usually bad) films, takes the cake of as best section on the site. Funny, culturally (ir)relevant and just plain awesome. Almost as awesome as...
The Angry Video Game Nerd: As far as internet celebrities go, James Rolfe a.k.a. "The Nerd" is definitely one of the most interesting. Quite like the Nostalgia Critic, the AVGN plays and reviews old/retro (and mostly crappy) games from classical consoles as NES and SEGA Genesis to obscure, bizarre platforms as the Phillips CDI and the Nintendo's Virtual Boy. It's a great plunge for nostalgia-filled gamers but also a history lesson for newer generations. To boot, it features a great theme composed b Kyle Justin. Also: funny as hell (although the scatological and profane commentaries of the Nerd may turn off the sensitive ones).
Zero Ponctuation: Grab some tea and biscuits, we have another British on our list: Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw, of Zero Ponctuation fame. I'll add more to this description late, bite me.
